Pete Hamill

I’m not sure that anyone under 35 would have any idea who Hamill is. Maybe I should make that 45. But the Morning Joe outfit on MSNBC had him on this morning. He looked pretty good. But by the silly half-assed comments he was making he struck me as the perfect example of the metaphysical exhaustion of American liberalism, especially the fists-at-the-ready New York school of liberal journalists, of which Hamill was emblematic back in the good old days when they had Nixon to kick around and kick around and kick around. (Perhaps if those old school liberal journalists hadn’t dined out on Nixon’s political corpse for so long they would have had time to think, a little.) (Sorry, again, Metaphor Police.)

Of course, the Boston portfolio of the “I don’t know anything about this, but let me tell you what I think” People’s Liberal is carried daily on Morning Joe by journalist/eyesore Mike Barnicle. Maybe Hamill’s appearance will stir the blood of the “old crowd.” Where’s Norman Mailer when you need him?
