I’ve always disliked the quip “get a life”

But Gail Collins really should try to do just that. In order to shoehorn her stupid comments into something resembling reality, she tries this:

Pawlenty’s defenders will undoubtedly say that he did not want his listeners to literally grab a golf club and hit something. But it is my experience that many Americans do not totally understand the concept of a metaphor.

This person who feels so confident that Americans have no common sense was not long ago the editorial page editor of the New York Times.

What’s the main hiring criterion over there? That you can’t be smarter than the publisher?
