Willie Mays, last night

Explaining to Charlie Rose why he was a great hitter.

“My eyes,” he said.

“I could see the stitches on the ball.”

He could see the stitches and the rotation of the ball and make an instant decision on which field to hit it to.

At the end of the interview he offered his hand to Charlie to shake it, and Charlie noted how much larger it was than his.

“I was a player,” Willie said. “You’re a broadcaster.”
