The big story last week was the incredible congressional rush to pass a bill that was more than 1,000 pages long in just two days — after which it sat on the president’s desk for three days while the Obamas were away on a holiday.
There is the same complete inconsistency in the bill itself. Despite the urgency in President Obama’s rhetoric, as well as in Congress’s haste in passing a bill which few — if any — members had time to read, much less consider, most of the actual spending will take place next year at the earliest.
Not even the most Alice-in-Wonderland actions will arouse the suspicions of those who have what William James once called “the will to believe.â€
This Obama thing has gotten ridiculous faster than the Clinton thing did. Four weeks in and I’m checking not the calendar but rather the clock, waiting for the equivalents of the Waco conflagration and the dead lawyer in the park to show up.
You probably think I’m kidding.
More: The Obama administration is starting to look like Clinton 2.0, all the cheesiness without the sex. The Clintons were going to spend all the money on Hillary’s Stalinist health care bureaucracy, but that got derailed. To avoid the risk of waiting, Obama is going with immediate emergency spending, with political payoffs flying out the door before the auditors can get their green eyeshades adjusted. Even if this Democratic Congress gets destroyed in the 2010 elections, no one will be able to accuse it of not paying good hard cash to those who keep the Party humming.
