John Updike, 76

When I discovered John Updike, way back when, it was like a scene from one of these comic book movies where someone is thrown across the room by a twitch from a strange force.

I just had never read a writer with such a gift for writing. I immediately wanted to write like that.

I said then that he would be the one American writer who would still be read in a hundred years.

His short stories were knock outs. Solitaire immediately comes to mind.

It’s a bad day when that much talent leaves the world all at once.
